Civil rights, whether the group involved is associated with a certain race, religion or more recently, united by common sexuality, the struggle to define a place in the wider American life and the effort to maintain an authentic black presence in the larger American culture.
Mulligan’s, a “crossover” movie, meaning it has the potential to draw an audience from both straight and gay America by focusing on an issue we mostly associate with gay culture – coming out - but on a much broader level, speaks to most Americans as most of us closet some aspect of ourselves, and Charlie David, the out gay actor, writer, producer frames it in the context of something every American can relate, the family.
