Watch Out! Mainstream News is Reporting on Dangers of Fukushima to America!

The cask containing 22 fuel rods at the No. 4 reactor building
is moved from the reactor building to another building where
a common fuel pool is located at the tsunami-crippled TEPCO's
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima prefecture,
The corporatized mainstream media in the U.S. does its very best to downplay the ongoing, potentially apocalyptic tragedy that occurred March 11, 2011 when a 9.0 magnitude quake crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, thus allowing critical information the time to be manipulated and mishandled, essentially covering up what is actually happening. The reason for this is obvious: The Fortune 500,, in particular, #8 on the list, General Electric, the primary architect of the nuclear reactors, not to mention,  the overwhelming political power they wield as one of the big six media conglomerates.

But as workers have begun the tricky but essential task of removing fuel rods from one of the reactor units there, a local ABC news outlet (Los Angeles CA) actually reported on the enormous danger that Fukushima poses to the USA, especially to the west coast.
Fukushima is an enormous problem that's getting bigger.

Nuclear Engineer Dr. Arjun Makhijani, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, confirmed that ocean currents are carrying the radioactive water to the West Coast.

"There are several hundred tons of radioactive water that are pouring into the ocean at the site every day," Makhijani said.
[...]
"Fukushima is potentially the biggest ticking time bomb in human history. The damaged plant is in no condition to withstand another massive earthquake or tsunami. The original 19-foot sea wall was shattered when the tsunami struck and provided little protection. The tsunami flooded the plant, cut off power, and the meltdown was underway.
[...]
Just last week, Dr. David Suzuki, one of Canada's top environmental scientists, stunned the audience when he described what will happen if a massive quake did hit today.

"It's bye bye Japan, and everybody on the West Coast of North America should evacuate," Suzuki said. "Now if that isn't terrifying, I don't know what is."
However, even though this report dares to go where other mainstream outlets dare not, it still  distorts  the facts,  whether as a result of omission or commission, leaving  the informed reader dubious of  the author/network's intention.

For instance, we're told that the radioactive isotopes will dilute, when, in fact, they are incapable of diluting, not to mention, they  tend to stay within a particular, circular current that runs between Japan and the west coast of North America/Canada. Not to mention, they omit the process of bioaccumulation, how radiation exposure increases through the food chain.  Radioactive particles in organisms at the bottom of the food chain are eaten by larger organisms, who concentrate it even more, and so on.

Moreover, both the Japanese and US governments have increased the "safe" limits, once again, in reaction to the Fukushima meltdown.

Fukushima's crippled reactors: the risky plan to move fuel rods

Japanese governor calls out TEPCO for ‘institutionalized lying’

Whirled Peas commented:
"Nuclear power plants pose an unacceptable risk to the world..

The fact that the risk hasn’t shown up often in the 55 years of nuclear energy leads some people to naively believe that all that is required to make it safe is just a little more research, better buildings, air-tight systems, and well-trained personnel, more support for university nuclear engineering departments. But no matter how many improvements and fail-safes are built into a reactor, there will always be a risk of failure — there are always material and human limitations. And when the failure does show up, the results have widespread disastrous consequences.

The Japanese people have great patience, perseverance, and drive. Their country has always been prone to natural disasters and yet they have quickly recovered from them in the past. If the Fukushima residents had experienced “only” an earthquake and tsunami, they’d be well on their way to rebuilding their cities and re-establishing their businesses. I have no doubt about that. It is the threat of radiation, the problems with clean up, and the quarantine of entire areas that have made life a living nightmare for the population. The nuclear disaster has made people powerless to get on with their lives. And just think of the amount of money it’s taken to evacuate people long term and to do the clean up? The risk has shown up, and it is unacceptable.

As the Radioactive Contamination Makes its Way up the Food Chain

Fukushima continues to threaten the entire survival of the planet as authorities at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant say they found cracks in the brace supporting an exhaust pipe. They are concerned the pipe could collapse in another earthquake area around the pipe, which is contaminated with high levels of radiation measuring 10 sieverts per hour, enough to kill a person “within a few weeks” after a single exposure, according to the World Nuclear Association.

“Even the tiniest mistake during an operation to extract over 1,300 fuel rods at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan could lead to a series of cascading failures with an apocalyptic outcome." -- Nuclear fallout researcher, Christina Consolo

In Our Fukushima Radiated World, Is Syria a Weapon of Mass Distraction?

While the Pacific Ocean boils, and the biggest global health emergency in the 21st century continues, why is the news saturated with the possibility that Assad used  chemical weapons, and with the war plan for American allied strikes against Syria? Especially considering our long history of using chemical weapons on civilians. Keep in mind, there is no hard evidence to support this possibility.

What about Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, a world changing event?  According to nuclear energy expert, Scott Portzline, who has kept watch on security issues at Three Mile Island for 25 years, at least three meltdowns-- where the core has melted through the reactor--have occurred at Fukushima.

400 tons of water-- which is weakening the foundation of the buildings to the point of collapse--is injected daily to keep the melted fuel cores cool, meanwhile 300 tons of that contaminated radioactive water, which contains 3x the cesium released by Chernobyl, leaks out into the Pacific Ocean.

Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope of cesium, comes from the fuel rods and is the most abundant leftover from a nuclear meltdown.  It has a 30-year half life, which means in 30 years, it's power will be half of what is today. It lasts 180-300 years. Caesium-137, and Caesium-134, chemically similar to potassium (K), is completely water soluble and is a macro-nutrient, which means it's absorbed by the smallest creatures in the ocean first, and as it moves up the food chain, becomes increasingly concentrated. In other words, radiation bio-accumulates particularly in meat, dairy and seafood, grown and harvested in radiation contaminated areas. Ingested radiation from contaminated food radiates body cells with high doses of radiation for very long periods of time. Children, the elderly, pregnant women and the immune compromised are far more sensitive to the effects of radiation.

Every Bluefin tuna tested in California waters was contaminated with Fukushima radiation according to the Wall Street Journal and CNN. Because governments have deceived the public about food safety radiation levels worldwide, the Food Lab tests for radioactiver contamination in food and the environment, globally.  Recently, Congress requested hearings on new developments at Fukushima plant regarding how the radioactive pollution in Pacific Ocean will affect U.S.

We found that absolutely every one of them [Bluefin tuna] had comparable concentrations of cesium-134 and cesium-137." -- Marine Biologist Nicholas Fisher, Wall Street Journal
This map is from June 2011.  It's much worse now

The bottom line is that politicians from both parties, and their corporate puppets, the mainstream media are totally controlled by big money. Huge amounts of money is tied up in the nuclear industry so we are constantly lied to while the controlled media downplays, distracts and misinforms us about the seriousness of this disaster.

Fukushima Radiation: 10 Hiroshimas an Hour?

It's reported that radiation levels are 18 times higher than previously reported  near a water storage tank at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, causing fresh concern about the safety of the wrecked facility. However scientist Patrick Flanagan, named by LIFE MAGAZINE, as one of the top ten scientists on earth, claims the equivalent of radiation equal to 10 Hiroshima's an hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, has/is being  pumped into the sea since March 11, 2011.

Meanwhile, Japan is set to pledge up to $500 million or $40 billion yen to contain leaks of radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, with the government stepping up its intervention in the world's worst atomic disaster.

The following pictures were taken yesterday. They show dark-colored radioactively contaminated water flowing onto the Fukushima beach and this is only one of many of the exit points of contamination from the Daiichi plant.

In the photos, some parts of the ground look wet around the tank, where are outside of the “leakage” area. The photos were taken on 8/31/2013.

In the press conference of 9/2/2013, Tepco’s spokesman commented it’s not the further leakage, but the rainfall.

However, other data of Tepco themselves shows there has been no rain at least since 8/27/2013. It is the report about the groundwater levels on the seaside of reactor2.

Fukushima Apocalypse? Japan Claims Fukushima Leak Worst Since Tsunami

Today, Japan issued its strongest warning about the Fukushima nuclear plant since the crisis began in 2011, as it struggled to seal a tank that has leaked 300 tons of radioactive water. It is the first time Japan has issued a so-called International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) rating for Fukushima since the meltdowns. Following the quake and tsunami, Fukushima was assigned the highest rating of 7, when it was hit by explosions after a loss of power and cooling. A puddle that formed near the leaking tank is emitting a radiation dose of 100 millisieverts an hour about 50 centimetres above the water surface, reporters were told at a news briefing.

This should not surprise anyone who has been really paying attention--in other words, digging for information--because the mainstream media, world governments, nuclear agencies, health organizations, etc., has completely ignored three ongoing triple meltdowns that have never been contained. The situation is either ignored or ridiculously downplayed. Just the fact that this is being reported at all should tell you how dangerous this is. Leaky tanks? More like the collapse of the infrastructure that is continuous, the nuclear criticialities, the atmospheric emissions, and the possible risk of more explosions. Yes, there was an explosion at Nuclear plant #4. Someone commented, "Standing in the middle of the freeway, you are directed to look at and note the leaky radiator, as the bus comes barreling down on you…"   Japan is quickly turning into radioactive quicksand...well, at the Fukushima plant sites, at the very least. Engineers warn reactor units may topple.

"In the context of what's going on now with the groundwater flooding of the site — because one of their mitigation measures which is not very well thought out, was building a seawall by freezing the ground — and guess what? The groundwater is piling up behind the seawall. [...] by backing up the water under the entire site, they are turning the ground into quicksand. And that's causing less stability — more instability. There are structural engineers and nuclear engineers warning that may be the final straw that's needed to topple not only Unit 4, but perhaps some of those other destroyed units with their high-level radioactive waste stored in pools fifty feet up in the air.[...] If that [Unit 4] pool goes down — enough of that fuel is still in there — it'll be on fire... --Kevin Kamps
Keep in mind that Fukushima’s reactors were built by General Electric and the same model is used all over the world. There are over 500 operating nuclear power plants, globally, with plans to build many more. As we've seen in Japan, all it takes is for one of those reactors to go critical and the entire globe is effected.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 was contained within 6 months, yet it is responsible for the death of at least one million people since its containment. That's one meltdown. We're looking at three meltdowns as the molten radioactive coriums currently bore their way into the deep crevices of the earth's mantle.

The radiation has been traveling across the Pacific Ocean by the Transpacific Jet Stream since March 11, 2011 and  has hit the West Coast of U.S. and Canada much harder than they're letting on.

Radiation Levels Will Concentrate in Pockets In Baja California and Other West Coast Locations
"While many people assume that the ocean will dilute the Fukushima radiation, a previously-secret 1955 U.S. government report concluded that the ocean may not adequately dilute radiation from nuclear accidents, and there could be “pockets” and “streams” of highly-concentrated radiation.

Last year, scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and 3 scientists from the GEOMAR Research Center for Marine Geosciences showed that radiation on the West Coast of North America could end up being 10 times higher than in Japan:"

New Study: Thyroid Cancer Surge Among Youth In Fukushima Region
"The nuclear accident of Fukushima is already leading to a surge in the number of cases of thyroid cancer, according to research being presented this week in Switzerland by Japanese scientist Toshihide Tsuda.

The Swiss daily Le Temps reports that Tsuda, professor of environmental epidemiology at the University of Okayama, said his tests show the annual incidence of thyroid cancer among those 18-years-old and younger in the Fukushima area to be 157 per one million, more than 31 times superior to the national average of five per million.

These numbers, presented in the Swiss city of Basel, show a stronger and faster evolution than that after the Chernobyl incident in the Soviet Union in 1986 and, Tsuda believes, are only the first signs of a wider health catastrophe.

In Containment. 15 Months After Fukushima Disaster, it's Still a Disaster.

On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 tsunami and subsequent tsunami hit the Tohku area, in the northern part of mainland Japan. On March 12, the #1 reactor exploded. On March 14th, the #3 reactor containing plutonium exploded. Two more explosions followed.

The Japanese parliamentary panel concluded, in their  report last week, that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster was caused by government-industry "collusion," thus "man-made".

Yet, 15 months after this monumental disaster, it's still a disaster, chiefly due to the collusion-ers who made this disaster possible.  An ongoing criminal cover-up of the safety dangers of the nuclear plant by the Japanese government, TEPCO (12.5 billion bailout, bring the bailout total to $44 billion) , and GE management - who built the plant in Fukushima  continue to collude in order to ensure the continuous suffering of their victims

The following documentary, not yet finished, takes you where the mainstream media refuses to go

Part 1: People in the city of Minamisoma, Fukushima remember the victims of the tsunami fifteen months after the March 11 disaster. Ian then visits the former site of the 20 km exclusion zone and is questioned by a police officer. Later, citizens of Minamisoma share the personal struggles they continue to face.

Part 2: Before heading to the evacuation zone to conduct an inspection, National Diet member and son of the former Japanese prime minister, Shinjiro Koizumi visits temporary shops set up for the evacuees of the March 11 disaster where he displays questionable demeanor towards the victims. Later, the evacuee who was chosen to give Koizumi flowers during his visit and was on the receiving end of his brand of humour offers him advice on being a politician. Finally, Minamisoma resident Hiroshi prepares to take Ian into the evacuation zone.

Part 3: Hiroshi takes Ian into Odaka, the southern-most part of Minamisoma which is between 10 to 20 km from the damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima. After the nuclear meltdown Odaka was evacuated and became part of exclusion zone, and since access has only recently been allowed, much of the destruction remains exactly as it was after the earthquake and tsunami. Ian speaks with a resident of Odaka about the current state of limbo they are in and their fears for the future. Later, on his way to the exclusion zone, just 10 km from the nuclear plant, Ian meets a woman and her father who are also heading to the no-go zone to visit their home for the first time since the disaster.

Cold Shutdown? Fukushima Reactor Reaches Highest Temperature Ever.

On September 28, 2011, it was reported that the Japanese prime minister at the time - Naoto Kan - contemplated evacuating tens of millions of people from in and around Tokyo - that's 30 million people - but didn't because he feared the panic and chaos that would result. The Japanese leadership were also accused of knowing months ago that areas around the nuclear plant would not be habitable for decades.

In December, 2011, the Japanese government and TEPCO declared that all the reactors were in a state of "cold shutdown".  However, in the last few days, one TEPCO graph showed that Reactor No. 2 showed a temperature spike in excess of 90 degrees Celsius . With the injection of massive amounts of water, the temperature is now at 78 degrees Celcius.

MsMilkytheclown is doing a great job of reporting on the ongoing, under-reported Fukushima crisis.

Where Did the HAARP Website Go?

Well, according to Press Core World News, the US government ordered  the HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) website down, three weeks ago, "to conceal US weather modification and earthquake inducing warfare activities against foreign states."

The Environmental Modification Convention (ENMOD) prohibits the military or other hostile use of environmental modification techniques or weather warfare, "which is the use of weather modification techniques for the purposes of inducing damage or destruction."

Now, because HAARP is never mentioned by those in the mainstream media,  too many people assume - that is, if they've even heard of HAARP - that HAARP is nothing more than a benign weather monitoring station ...just another crazy conspiracy theory cooked up by those who have too much time on their hands.

Well, these patents should prove otherwise:

Japan: A Ticking Time Bomb?

Over one month later, after a catastrophic earthquake, tsunami, Chernobyl levels of radiation, and liquefaction - the process whereby earthquake shaking causes poorly consolidated ground with high water content to behave like a liquid - the people of Japan, despite their country's earthquake history (approx 1,500 earthquakes strike the island nation every year) still has no idea what to expect. All they know is that things are not good.

Even, the normally cheerful and optimistic Physics Professor, Michio Kaku called Fukushima reactors "ticking time bombs.

Evidence of Chain Reaction at Fukushima Unit 1.

Recent press reports have discussed the possibility that Fukushima Unit 1 may be having a nuclear chain reaction. Neutron bursts were detected 13 times, about a mile away from the reactor, as well as the presence of an “ethereal blue flash,” above the plant. Moreover, new data released by TEPCO indicates that even though Fukushima Unit 1 was shut down during the March 11 earthquake, it appears to have "gone critical" again.

In the video below, Arnie Gundersen, Chief Nuclear Engineer from Fairewinds Energy Associates, explains that the presence of neutrons inside a nuclear reactor means that a chain reaction is definitely occurring.  The discovery of isotope Chlorine-38, not present in nature, in Fukushima #1 reactor,  is more than likely, created by Chlorine-37, present in seawater, absorbing a neutron.  This chain reaction must be responsible for turning on a  portion of the nuclear core in reactor #1, without human intervention, considering it was shut down, at the same time as all of the other reactors, which do not show signs of the isotopes present in #1.

Japan's Triple Disaster: An Act of Genocide?

Moreover, millions...possibly billions of people, worldwide, will suffer consequences from this horrific event. So, I hope that what geoscientist and international radiation expert, Leuren Moret says about the Japanese earthquake and tectonic warfare is not true; however, she sure seems to know what she's talking about.

Fukushima: What's Really Going On?

If you listen to the mainstream media, regarding anything, really, you will probably hear what you want to hear: everything will be fine as long as you listen to us, but, everything will not be fine, especially if you listen to them. If you don't think so,  research the 9/11 workers who are sick, dying or dead.  Research the  Gulf Coast residents and workers, that nearly a year after the oil disaster began, are sick, and dying from BP’s toxic chemicals.  Where was/is the mainstream media?

Take "safe levels of radiation", or event better, at levels far below the levels that would pose a risk to humans” that self-interested parties like to claim, exist, without putting it into context.

"We all get between 1 to 10 millisieverts a year - an average 2 to 3 millisieverts - from background radiation," says Burns.

Air travel and CT scans are other common sources.

Official limits for radiation in food and water are set in the context of such exposures.

For example, the limit for nuclear workers is much higher than for the general public.

Ruff says it's important to remember radiation limits like this are not levels below which there is no effect.

"They're just a practical compromise between what's achievable and what's deemed an acceptable risk," he says.

Ruff says it's also important to remember the impact of radiation is greater on the unborn, infants and children, especially girls, compared to adults.
Now, Physicians for Social Responsibility say there are no safe thresholds for radiation.  However, once again, that means little without putting it into some sort of context.  Nevertheless, you can be sure of one thing.  Governments lie cover up. They always have and they always will...especially when profit is at stake. Moreover, every single government that has ever had a radiation problem covered up the extent of the danger.
There are no warning signs anywhere along the coast. People walk on this shoreline with their dogs and children. The dogs take the contaminated mud back home on their hair. The children carry it on their shoes. It then dries and can be breathed in. The deeper you dig down into the mud, the more poisonous the levels become because of the accumulation of waste over the years.
Fortunately, for us, we have the Internet, and the technology available to check them out. Unfortunately, the news is not good.

More signs of serious radiation contamination in and near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were detected Thursday, with the latest data finding groundwater containing radioactive iodine 10,000 times the legal threshold and the concentration of radioactive iodine-131 in nearby seawater rising to the highest level yet.

It appears that the core of No. 2 reactor - the one that Dr. Chris Busby said has a 5% of creating a nuclear explosion - "has melted through the bottom of the pressure vessel and at least some of it is down on the concrete floor beneath".

One nuclear expert warned that it might be another 100 years before melting fuel rods can be safely removed.

The following video took place in Stockholm, April 22, 2009. The recently resigned Scientific Secretary of the ICRP, Dr Jack Valentin (icrp.org), concedes to Pr. Chris Busby, ECRR (euradcom.org) , that the ICRP model cannot be used to predict the health effects of exposures and that for certain internal exposures it is insecure by up to two orders of magnitude. He also said that as he was no longer employed by ICRP he could agree that the ICRP and the United Nations committee on radiation protection (UNSCEAR) had been wrong in not examining the evidence from the Chernobyl accident, and other evidence outlined below, which shows large errors in the ICRP risk model.

Fukushima Nuclear Disaster May Become Worst in History.

Japan's damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima has been emitting radioactive iodine and caesium at levels approaching those seen in the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident in 1986 according to   New Scientist. Moreover, the Fukushima plant contains "1760 metric tons of fresh and used nuclear fuel on site last year, according to a presentation by its owners, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco)."  Chernobyl contained only 180 tons.

What's even scarier is that the plant's Unit 3 reactor contains MOX, , a combination of uranium and plutonium fuel that according to the Nuclear Information Resource Center (NIRS); "this plutonium-uranium fuel mixture is far more dangerous than typical enriched uranium -- a single milligram (mg) of MOX is as deadly as 2,000,000 mg of normal enriched uranium".

Japan Earthquake Victims: Erosion of Trust in Institutions? DIY.

Notes left behind by Japanese evacuees looking for loved ones inside a shelter in the earthquake and tsunami-destroyed town of Rikuzentakata, Japan on March 21. (AP Photo/David Guttenfelder)
Japan has proven to be resilient when it comes to surviving and reversing natural disasters, because it has a culture and mentality that facilitates rebounds and recovery, especially regarding earthquakes. However, this earth-changing quake may render Japanese efforts, less effective, in the long run, mainly because of the enormity of the catastrophe, the invisible threat of radiation, and most importantly, the lack of trust in the institutions with all of the crucial information needed to navigate this calamitous event.
"Japan is in a highly active tectonic zone where the Eurasian, Philippine Sea, Okhotsk and Pacific Plates converge. The unexpectedly strong quake took place where the Pacific Plate sinks under the Okhotsk Plate (subduction). In the affected region, the submerging Pacific Plate is very old and heavy and is sinking into the Earth’s core at a relatively high speed of 8 to 10 centimeters per year."
The western mainstream media's  coverage of Japan's post-earthquake and post-tsunami activity is already fading into the background, and was/is not giving a fully accurate picture.  On top of that, supposedly, Japan's "bureaucracy-media complex" is even worse, according to freelance journalist Takashi Uesugi, even though, since 2009, the Japanese press has become more aggressive after the end of 54 years of Liberal Democratic Party rule that shattered many of the cozy relationships between the ruling elite and the big media outlets.

So, what do you do when you can't trust the official word, or the accuracy of official radioactivity measurements. Well, DIY.  Create a croudsourced map of Geiger counter readings that contains a distributed network of 215 Geiger counter.

Under Japanese Buddhist practice, a cremation is the expected traditional way of dealing with the dead, but now with the death toll so high, crematoriums are overwhelmed and there is a shortage of fuel to burn them. Local municipalities are forced to dig mass graves as a temporary solution. (Paula Bronstein/Getty Images)

Fukushima Fifty and the Moral Courage of Japanese Citizens

As Japan continues to come to grips with the devastating toll exacted by the earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear meltdown that seems unavoidable, Japan's culture that emphasizes taking care of the other, contributes to the remarkable resilience of the Japanese in this horrific disaster,  providing them with the moral courage that makes heros out of ordinary citizens.

The Fukushima Fifty and all of the other courageous souls willingly put the needs of others above their own needs. Greed is almost non-existent in Japan. There is no price gauging or looting, as it would not be tolerated in such an other-centered culture.

If Japan shows us anything, it's the transience of worldy goods.  Maybe, it's time we take a page from their book,  try to put aside the  "greed is good" philosophy that has so permeated our culture over the last 30-years.
These first images of inside the stricken Fukushima Dai-Ichi power plant reveal the terrifying conditions under which the brave men work to save their nation from full nuclear meltdown.

The Fukushima Fifty - an anonymous band of lower and mid-level managers - have battled around the clock to cool overheating reactors and spent fuel rods since the disaster on March 11.

Large Earthquake Warning for West Coast Between March 19th and 26th

Geologist Jim Berkland, who predicted the 8.9 "World Series" earthquake, four days before it hit the San Francisco Bay area in 1989, said there is a high probability of another big earthquake hitting North America (Pacific-Northwest), this month (a top seismic window is developing between the 19th and 26th of March).

This is due to the coinciding of three of the maximum tide-raising forces:  a full moon on the 19th;  the closest approach of the moon, within an hour of the full moon, to the earth until 2016; and the very next day, an equinoctial tide. Not only that, the massive fish-kills near Redondo Beach and Mexico and the beaching of whales in San Diego point to changes in the magnetic field that often predict larger earthquakes.

The "official" word from former Department of Homeland Security inspector general Richard Skinner is that we're not prepared as as we should be for an earthquake on the scale of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan."

Widespread Radioactive Fallout Downwind.

According to the Institute for Science and International Security, the situation in Japan has considerably worsened. Japan was hit by a 5.7-magnitude aftershock and a second fire at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant as at least three of the four reactors are in a meltdown process. Japan has reported that radiation is being released directly into the air. At this time, it is reported that there is very little chance of ratiation reaching the United States.  However, it's also reported that Tokyo Electric and the Japanese government are under-stating or withholding information, both regarding the situation at the nuclear plant as well as radiological readings.

The amount of destruction, death, and suffering in Japan from the earthquake, tsunami and radioactive fallout is beyond comprehension. Here's the thing: Japan is probably the best prepared for this type of disaster. And even here, safety took a backseat to profits. So, will this be a wake-up call to the rest of us? Of course, earthquakes and tsunamis are beyond our control (unless they aren't, eco-terrorism may be alive and well). However, the safety of nuclear reactors is. But, our current paradigm of never ending growth and ever increasing consumption requires ever increasing amounts of energy and which, encourages profit over people.

Anyway, unfortunately, as much as, I'm sure, we would all like to alleviate the suffering of the Japanese, most of us, other than donating money or time, can do little to help. Nevertheless, we do have the power to manage as individuals or groups within our local sphere to possibly alleviate the potential suffering of ourselves and others.

Below is snapshot of the map that depicts environmental radiation levels across the USA, updated in real time every minute at Radiation Network. . You can see where all of the nuclear reactors are located.

So, what's that old boyscouot motto, again?  Ah yes, "Be prepared".

Well, maybe it might be a good idea to have some inkling of what to do should we experience  radioactive fallout, especially considering that both sides of the American political spectrum are controlled by corporate interests with mandates to increase profits at the total expense of humanity. And thanks to Citizens United, our fully corporate owned election process.

What to Do If a Nuclear Disaster is Imminent might be a good place to start...just in case.

Aftershocks, Fires Keep Japan on Edge; Snow Covers Disaster Area
In Fukushima city, capital of the prefecture where Tokyo Electric Power Co. workers are battling to contain fires and radiation leaks at nuclear reactors, about 200 people lined up at the Co-op supermarket to buy provisions. The queue at a local gasoline station stretched for more than a kilometer, there was no running water and portable toilets were overflowing.
